African- American Museum

    579 S Garvin St., Evansville, IN 47713

    (812) 423-5188

This museum tells the stories of local African-American history, especially regarding the surrounding neighborhoods. It is housed in an apartment building formerly part of a low-income housing project built for African-American residents of Evansville; the rest of the project buildings are still in use as housing behind the museum. Entry to the museum costs 5 dollars, and is well worth it.

Penny Lane sells fairly inexpensive direct trade coffee (i.e. not from a “fair trade distributor”). There’s board games, shelves full of books, and music or poetry nearly every weekend evening. Heidi, the owner of the cafe, looks like a crust punk, and was recently appointed to the Arts District Committee of City Council!
